Snape wasn't a good Potions teacher. He played favourites and regularly demeaned his students. He was a better Dark Arts teacher but still, I don't think he was spectacular. His true value was in being an incredibly brave and dedicated double agent- not a good teacher.

^ I agree, I think people are blinded by their love for him. Don't get me wrong, he's a fantastic character, but so many of his fans act like he has no faults whatsoever, which is simply not true. It demeans the character entirely if you can't even notice his flaws, which everyone has. He's not perfect; nobody is. The only students he openly respected were from Slytherin so I don't see why Gryffindor/Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff students should show him any respect. He wasn't a very good teacher at all - he had the knowledge and wisdom of course but IMO it takes more than knowledge to be considered a good teacher. Lupin, to me, is the epitome of a good Hogwarts teacher.
