But each turn is an hour. It would take a really long time to go from 1994 all the way back to the 1940s. And then there's the fact that you can't go back once you're done.

Time traveling is dangerous. They could risk the butterfly effect and end up creating someone even worse than Voldemort. Not to mention all the time-turners were destroyed in the Order of the Phoenix, anyway.

The thing people are forgetting is that you can't change events when you time travel. Buckbeak never died in the first place; it escaped and it was because of Harry and Hermione. You cannot change the past, you can only go back to it and make it happen.

I don't think time turners can go back that far. I think they're only designed to travel back a few hours or days.

And as Jenna points out, changing the past can only succeed when you don't in the present have clear evidence that something did happen. Voldemort's life and the things he did are clear evidence that he wasn't killed as a child. So any attempt would be bound to fail.
