I don't know it's so much misunderstood as that the character really wasn't developed well to begin with.

It's more like she suffered a loss most readers can't imagine experiencing, so they hate her for grieving and reacting naturally. But I'll go for misunderstood.

Also, people are bad about taking Harry's POV as gospel, or generally any Gryffindor's. If it had been Hermione grieving Ron or whoever, I imagine the reaction would be quite different

Although people usually hate women showing "ugly" sadness like that so maybe even Hermione couldn't get away with it
