I think it was inevitable. Being in slytherin with the people he was and at the time he was, yeah I think he would've joined anyway.

I think if he hadn't been put down by everyone and had had some really good friends, he probably wouldn't have joined. But I suppose it's not just the fault of James and Sirius but his whole youth sucked, so ... :)

I think the abuse he suffered at the hands of his Muggle father had already sent him down that path. He had a miserable childhood and was determined to leave his Muggle heritage behind. He was friends with Lily but was still put in Slytherin because of his fierce ambition. The Death Eaters offered him the power he craved. I'm sure his miserable school days contributed to his decision to join the Death Eaters but I'm not convinced that it was the only deciding factor.

No teasing wouldlead to no slip-of-the-tongue to Lily, and then if they were together, she may have led him off of that path.

That wasn't the only reason.

Oh come on. Him being bullied had ZERO influence over his decision to become a Death Eater, I'm sure. I like Snape as an adult, him being the hero and whatnot, but I don't like him as a teen.

I agree with Bre. I think regardless of him being bullied, he still would have gotten sucked into the Dark Arts and thus become a Death Eater. Thank goodness Lily got him to fall in love with her. If not, he wouldn't have cared if the Potters died or not and would have stayed a Death Eater.

It's hard to say. There were many, many factors that led to Severus becoming a Death Eater. However, Lily leaving was the final straw. And Lily left because of what Severus called her - which was caused by Severus' humiliation at James' hands.

Or, perhaps, had Severus been allowed to have Hogwarts his escape, like he'd originally wanted, he wouldn't have been so easily swayed by the Slytherins.

^Not the best logic ever. The people in Wormtail's house became Order members (including his friends), but Wormtail became a Death Eater and betrayed his friends.
