Mate, Vampires i'd say are fine if you're feeling lazy or just want one, but i quite like unique things.

I wouldn't say that vampires make for lazy writing. You could easily make it original or unique by concept and some decent writing skills. The problem that rises from vampires, werewolves and other universal monsters and tropes alike is that there is an easy crutch that people can lean on; So many stories having been written so often on the topics that it's all there for them tap into. The trick is to avoid that while still keeping the core essence that makes a vampire. I've read some pretty interesting short stories that have redefined vampires in new interesting concepts...
